I wanted to write a little about supplements. You know, up until a few months ago I was really really bad at taking supplements and didn’t really care to be honest. I took things from time to time but not long enough to see the benefits from them because well, they’re hassle to take and I’m not a fan of taking tablets actually. I struggle to swallow the big ones..so I was put off right from the start.
But since I’ve started focusing more on my health and fitness more recently, I’ve seen the importance of supplementation. Yes, it is a faff, and I hate taking so many tablets every day but I can see that they are helping my body inside and out. So I thought I’d go through a few that I’ve been recommended to take as ‘essentials’ and why after I had a few queries after I posted a photo on my Instagram.
First up, multivitamin. Kinda obvious that I should have been taking this from the start. This bad boy is an essential and will cover your everyday vitamin and mineral needs. So why is this so essential? Well becoming deficient in any vitamin or mineral causes a breakdown of the metabolic pathway and causes your efficiency and performance to decrease. Not what you want when you’re trying to achieve your goals, whatever they may be. Even if you are not active in terms of fitness, they’re important for everyday life such as at work, improving your brain capability and helping you stopping getting so fatigued.
Secondly, omega 3s. These are essential people!
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential nutrients for health. We need omega-3 fatty acids for numerous normal body functions, such as controlling blood clotting and building cell membranes in the brain, and since our bodies cannot make omega-3 fats, we must get them through food or supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are also associated with many health benefits, including protection against heart disease and possibly stroke. New studies are identifying potential benefits for a wide range of conditions including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
If you suffer with digestive issues, omega 3s could possibly help reduce the inflammation of the stomach. They are also needed for fat loss if this is your goal as they increase your insulin sensitivity and increase the heat of your ‘cellular furnaces’ which means your metabolism will be raised. They are also great for your skin and hair..so many reasons to take them!
I use Eskimo 3 Omega 3 capsules because they’re really good quality compared to many you can buy in your everyday stores.
Then there’s Vitamin D. People always question me on this one as they don’t really know anything about vitamin D other than we get it from sunlight. One of the simplest things you can do to lose fat and improve body composition is to make sure you are getting enough vitamin D. Over and over again, research shows that if you have low vitamin D, you will be more likely to be overweight, have less muscle mass, and be at higher risk of a long list of diseases. So there you go
Before bed I take ZMA and spray magnesium oil on my skin. ZMA is a combination of zinc and magnesium and has been known to improve anabolic hormones and increase muscle growth. They also help you sleep better as it relaxes your body, and better sleep is essential if fat loss is a goal but also for general good health. Magnesium oil is also an extra muscle relaxant to help with sleep and to allow faster recovery from training.
These are just some of the supplements I take, and of course there are millions of others depending on your health and personal goals but I’d say that everyone could benefit from these ones
Do you take any supplements? Do you see the benefits?
